TIPD employs 19 sworn officers and 5 support staff for parking enforcement, records, property/evidence management and information technology.
With a population of more than 6,500 residents during the off season and more than 20,000 residents during peak season, Treasure Island is a barrier island in Pinellas County on Florida’s west coast. The city covers more than 3.4 square miles (from Gulf shoreline) with an actual land area of only 1.3 miles. The city has frontage on the gulf for more than 3.83 miles and bay frontage covering more than 28.39 miles.
Treasure Island is connected to the other parts of Pinellas County by three bridges including the Treasure Island C.W. “Bill” Young Bascule Bridge & Causeway—drawbridge operated by the City of Treasure Island, the John’s Pass Bridge—drawbridge operated by the State of Florida, and the Blind Pass Bridge—fixed bridge operated by the State of Florida.
Over the years, the city leaders in Treasure Island have considered eliminating the Treasure Island Police Department and relying on policing from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office as a way to save money. The city’s charter requires that both the City Commission and voters through a referendum election would have to approve eliminating the Police Department.
Other local police departments in surrounding areas have eliminated their police departments including St. Pete Beach and Madeira Beach.
