Pinellas County DUI Operations

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has conducted similar operations to crack down on impaired drivers for many years choosing to focus on holiday weekends throughout the year. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has named these operations Wolf Packs as the Sheriff’s officers work together in conjunction with multiple other Pinellas County law enforcement agencies in packs to increase patrols and traffic enforcement and specifically to make arrests for driving under the influence. Unlike a stationary DUI Checkpoint, the Wolf Packs roam the county looking for impaired drivers.

This year, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has reported that the Wolf Pack operation will start at 7 p.m., Friday, July 1, 2016 and continue until 5 a.m., Saturday, July 2, 2016.

While the Sheriff’s Office makes the worthy assertion that the Wolf Packs work to reduce traffic fatalities as well as accidents involving property damage and serious bodily injury, officers on a “Wolf Pack” assignment can sometimes overreach. The very idea that an officer is assigned to a special task force with the specific goal of identifying impaired drivers can lead to law enforcement to stop and arrest drivers who under other circumstances may not have been stopped.
