The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has announced that they will participate in The Florida Sheriff’s Task Force “Operation Knot Lit.”

Operation Knot Lit seeks to target those who fail to comply with the statutory requirements regarding driving under the influence (DUI) and boating under the influence (BUI).

“Operation Knot Lit” will be conducted from July 3, 2019, to July 7, 2019.

Heightened Enforcement for the 4th of July Weekend 2019 includes participation by the following Pinellas County Sheriff’s Units:

  • Patrol Operations Bureau
  • DUI Unit
  • Traffic Enforcement Unit
  • Marine Unit

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has stated the goal of the operation is to create safer roads and waterways for residents and visitors in Pinellas County.

According to Florida Statutes § 316.193, drivers can be considered under the influence when they are driving or are in actual physical control of a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol to the point where their normal faculties are impaired. Normal faculties include the ability to perform mental and physical acts of daily life, such as seeing, hearing, balancing or talking.

A person is guilty of BUI in the State of Florida if they have a blood or breath alcohol level of .08 or more.  A first time BUI conviction may include up to a $500 fine, up to six (6) months in jail, probation, community service hours, substance abuse evaluation and treatment, and a ten (10) day impound of your vessel.
