The Largo Police Department was created in 1924. The current police chief is Jeffrey Undestad. John Carroll was the police chief from 2010 through 2013. Lester Aradi was the police chief from 2001 to 2010. The 18-square-mile city has approximately 137 officers and police supervisors.

Today, the Patrol Division of the Largo Police Department performs the uniformed patrol functions of the department including 24-hour response to the initial investigation of crimes and incidents, traffic enforcement and control, and accident investigation. The specialized units within the Largo Police Department include the TAC, Traffic Safety, K-9 and the Motor Unit.

Since July of 1988, the Largo Police Department has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). Later it became accredited by the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Agencies.
